Through cross-cultural comparisons insights can be drawn about children and families in other cultures. There are various methods wherein different aspects of culture work together as a system in the environment. The methods of rearing children in Asian countries or African countries are heavily influenced by their cultures. From the larger size of their families, methods used to discipline, sharing of responsibilities, respect for elders are all influenced by their cultures. In contrast the children from the U.S. middle-class families are reared in small, nuclear families and have independent working styles. Children learn from each other and from the society that they are brought up. Children of different cultures would have vastly varied childhood experiences but certain aspects of human development are universal.
